8th "José Jacinto Cuevas" Yamaha International Piano Competition

Repertoire

  • The repertoire of each stage must be performed by heart, without the repetitions (except for the forms of some classical sonatas that require the repetitions).
  • The participant will be able to choose the order in which he/she will perform his/her repertoire in each stage.
  • The participants in the Adults Group will have a accompanist for the semifinal stage. If the participant desires he/she can bring his/her own accompanist for the semifinal stage. The expenses for the accompanist will be paid by the participant.
  • The jury reserves the right to interrupt the participant during his/her performance in case it exceeds the time limit for each stage.

Youth Group Repertoire

The stages for the Youth Group will consist of the following:

  1. Video Qualification Stage

    The camera must be in a fixed position, showing always the right profile of the participant, his/her hands and the piano pedals. The most important factors about the videos will be quality and camera position as indicated previously.

    Recordings made in previous years or in differente places will not be accepted.

    For this stage, the participant must record the Prelude and Fugue of J. S. Bach that he/she and the first movement of the Classical Sonata (J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart or L. v. Beethoven) that he/she is going to perform in the First Stage of the Competition and a piece of the participant's choice which best represents him/her.

    The video must be uploaded and sent with the application material no later than Monday, June 5th, 2023. Please double check your recordings after uploading them to the portal, previously we have received empty recordings, recordings without sound and recordings we haven't been able to listen to..

    Participants will be notified of the results of this stage no later than Friday, June 30th, 2023 via e-mail.

  2. First Stage - Maximum Duration (30 minutes)

    • An étude from F. Chopin, Op. 10 or Op. 25
      (Op. 10, No. 3; Op. 10, No. 6 and the postopus études cannot be played)
    • A prelude and fugue from J. S. Bach
      (Books I and II from "The Well-Tempered Clavier")
    • A sonata from J. Haydn, W. A. Mozart or L. v. Beethoven
      (The following sonatas cannot be played: W. A. Mozart - Sonata in C major, KV545; W. A. Mozart - Sonata in E flat major, KV282; L. v. Beethoven - Sonata, Op. 49, No. 1 and No. 2; L. v. Beethoven - Sonata, Op. 79).
  3. Second Stage - Maximum Duration (35 minutes)

    • Mandatory Mexican Piece - M. M. Ponce - Mazurca No. 16

    • A work from C. Debussy or M. Ravel
      (Free choice between Preludes, Suite movements, Études, etc.)
    • A romanticism work from one of the following composers
      (F. Chopin, R. Schumann, F. Schubert, J. Brahms, F. Liszt, F. Mendelssohn, E. Grieg, P. I. Tchaikovsky, C. Franck, M. Mussorgsky, S. Rachmaninov, among others)
    • A 20th century piece, written after 1900, from one of the following composers
      (S. Prokofiev, D. Shostakovich, B. Bartók, R. Schedrin, P. Hindemith, A. Schonberg, A. Berg, A. Webern, I. Albeniz, E. Granados, M. de Falla, A. Ginastera, among others)

Adults Group Repertoire

The stages for the Adults Group will consist of the following:

  1. Video Qualification Stage

    • Mandatory Mexican Piece - M. M. Ponce - Mazurca No. 23 *

  4. Third Stage

    A concert for piano and orchestra. You can choose one of the following:

    • L. v. Beethoven – Concertos No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5
    • J. Brahms – Concertos No. 1 and No. 2
    • F. Chopin – Concertos No. 1 and No. 2
    • R. Schumann – Concerto, Op. 54
    • P. I. Tchaikovsky – Concerto No. 1
    • E. Grieg – Concerto No. 1, Op. 16
    • F. Mendelssohn – Concerto in G minor
    • C. Saint-Saëns – Concertos No. 2 and No. 5
    • S. Rachmaninov – Concerto No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
    • F. Liszt – Concerto No. 1 and No. 2
    • B. Bartók – Concerto No. 3
    • D. Shostakovich – Concerto, Op. 102, No. 2
    • S. Prokofiev – Concerto No. 1 and No. 3
    • M. Ravel – Concerto in G major

    The third stage is divided in semifinal and final. The semifinal is going to be conducted with a professional accompanist, chosen by the Organizational Committee. If the participant wants to bring his/her own accompanist, he/she can do so, but the expenses must be paid for by the participant. The first three places, not defined at that moment, will participate in the Grand Finale of the Competition, accompanied by the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra on Friday, December 1st 2023. After the concert, the winner and the second and third places are going to be announced. Furthermore the public is going to have the opportunity to choose its favorite finalist from the final stage with the Orchestra.

    * The Winner and the finalists will be defined after averaging out their grades from all of the Competition's stages.
