9th “José Jacinto Cuevas” Yamaha International Piano Competition

Repertoire

  • The repertoire for all stages must be performed from memory, without repetitions (except for the forms of some classical sonatas that require repetitions).
  • The contestant may decide the order in which they will perform the works in each stage.
  • The contestant in the Senior Group will have an accompanying pianist for the semifinal test. If the participant wishes, they may bring their own accompanying pianist, whose expenses are covered by the participant.
  • The jury reserves the right to interrupt the contestant during their performance if the time limit for each stage is exceeded.

Youth Group Repertoire

The stages for the Youth Group will consist of the following:

  1. Video Qualification Stage

    Important factors for video review:

    • The recording must be made specifically for the Competition.
    • The camera should be in a fixed position, always showing the right profile of the candidate, the hands, and the piano pedals.
    • Each video must be a continuous take without editing.
    • Each video must begin with a brief introduction of the applicant talking about the following points:
      • Applicant's name
      • Applicant's date and year of birth
      • Indicate which piece is being presented in the specific video
      • Indicate that the video is for the preliminary stage of the 9th “José Jacinto Cuevas” Yamaha International Piano Competition

    For this stage, the candidate must record in separate videos, following the previously mentioned points, the following works:

    • Prelude and Fugue by J.S. Bach that would be presented in the First Stage of the Competition
    • First movement of the Classical Sonata (J. Haydn, W.A. Mozart, or L.v. Beethoven) that would be presented in the First Stage of the Competition
    • A work of free choice that best represents the participant

    The videos must be uploaded to the registration portal along with the required documents by Monday, June 16, 2025. Please check if your recordings play correctly after uploading them to the portal, as we have occasionally received empty recordings, without sound, or that cannot be opened.

    Participants will be notified of the result of this test no later than Wednesday, July 2, 2025 via email.

  2. First Stage - Maximum duration (30 minutes)

    • One étude by F. Chopin, Op. 10 or Op. 25
      (Op. 10 No. 3; Op. 10 No. 6 and the posthumous études cannot be played)
    • One prelude and fugue by J.S. Bach
      (Books I and II of "The Well-Tempered Clavier")
    • One sonata by J. Haydn, W.A. Mozart, or L.v. Beethoven
      (The following sonatas cannot be played: W.A. Mozart - Sonata in C Major KV545; W.A. Mozart - Sonata in E-flat Major KV282; L.v. Beethoven - Sonata Op. 49 No. 1 and No. 2; L.v. Beethoven - Sonata Op. 79).
  3. Second Stage - Maximum duration (35 minutes)

    • Mandatory Mexican Work - José Rolón - Bosquejos, 3 Danzas

    • One work by C. Debussy or M. Ravel
      (Free choice among Preludes, Suite Movements, Études, etc.)
    • One romantic work by one of the following composers
      (F. Chopin, R. Schumann, F. Schubert, J. Brahms, F. Liszt, F. Mendelssohn, E. Grieg, P.I. Tchaikovsky, C. Franck, M. Mussorgsky, S. Rachmaninov, among others)
    • One 20th century work written after 1900, by one of the following composers
      (S. Prokofiev, D. Shostakovich, B. Bartók, R. Schedrin, P. Hindemith, A. Schonberg, A. Berg, A. Webern, I. Albeniz, E. Granados, M. de Falla, A. Ginastera, among others)

Senior Group Repertoire

The stages for the Senior Group will consist of the following:

  1. Video Qualification Stage

    • Mandatory Mexican Work - Armando Montiel Olvera - Cuatro Danzas Mexicanas

    A concerto for piano and orchestra, which must be chosen from among the following:

    • L.v. Beethoven - Concertos No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5
    • J. Brahms - Concertos No. 1 and No. 2
    • F. Chopin - Concertos No. 1 and No. 2
    • R. Schumann - Concerto, Op. 54
    • P.I. Tchaikovsky - Concerto No. 1
    • E. Grieg - Concerto No. 1, Op. 16
    • F. Mendelssohn - Concerto in G minor
    • C. Saint-Saëns - Concertos No. 2 and No. 5
    • S. Rachmaninov - Concerto No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
    • F. Liszt - Concerto No. 1 and No. 2
    • B. Bartók - Concerto No. 3
    • D. Shostakovich - Concerto, Op. 102, No. 2
    • S. Prokofiev - Concerto No. 1 and No. 3
    • M. Ravel - Concerto in G Major

    The Third Stage is divided into semifinal and final. The semifinal will be done with a professional accompanying pianist, chosen by the organizing committee. If the participant wishes, they may bring their own accompanying pianist, whose expenses are covered by the participant. The top three places, not yet defined, will go to the Grand Final of the Competition, accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra of Yucatan on Friday, December 5, 2025. After this concert, the winner, second and third place will be decided. The audience will also be given the opportunity to choose their favorite finalist.

    * The Winner and the finalists will be determined after calculating an average of the scores obtained during all stages of the Competition.
